Press releases are boring. To announce Ryan Kutscher and Matt MacDonald as co-chief creative officers of JWT New York, we hit the streets last weekend filming our New York rendition of Perfect Strangers.
This week marks the 45th International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, where JWT Worldwide Chairman and CEO, Bob Jeffrey, announces the debut of Worldmakers — a talk show featuring some of the world’s most respected thinkers exploring the convergence of advertising, technology and entertainment.
In Las Vegas today & tomorrow for a location scout at the Las Vegas Convention Center in advance of next month’s Worldmakers debut episode series at the Consumer Electronics Show 2012.
Today marks the launch of this iPhone/iPad gem that brings to life characters from the animated holiday classic “Yes, Virginia.” The augmented reality app lets users take photographs with Virginia, Charlotte, Ollie & Barry and create & share holiday greeting cards with personalized messages on Facebook and Twitter. The above design optimization I helped oversee during my three weeks in New York this October will kick-in with the next version update.

We travelled down to Atlanta this week with a lean & mean shooter, editor crew to build a story-booth at this year’s Microsoft Convergence conference. We wanted to hear what existing Dynamics CRM users have to say regarding the software’s impact on business. Photographs of customers who participated in this storybooth experience were incorporated real-time into a matrix feed on the dontgetforced.com website and twitter feed. Short videos were live later and incorporated into banner executions.

The challenge in filming consumer stories, especially testimonial content, is creating a comfortable environment for participants very quickly. In this case, our team had less than several minutes with each interviewee. We built a set-up just like that of Errol Morris’s Interrotron, where interviewees spoke with our interviewer via a monitor located just under the camera. The end result: a sensation for our audience that the interviewees are speaking directly to them.

To better match the backdrops in our videos to existing digital creative, we printed and shipped foam core in the unique gradient in two pieces to Atlanta. Any hint of the horizontal line where the boards were attached was then easily removed in post using a very light blur.

The second phase of Microsoft Office 2010’s Make it Great campaign launched this month with additional films being released in the UK, France and Germany. Kudos to these best friends explaining working remotely on a project with just the right language.

We partnered with Wunderman to assist with headline copy translation for these foreign films but as a producer, I love few things more than being able to work in-language on international campaigns to help craft the best story.

There are no accents on capital letters in French. (These films would later be one reason of a few I enrolled in Middlebury’s French Language School the following summer.)

Tornado touch-down in New York in September almost had us miss last flight out to Stillwater, Oklahoma to shoot this football timelapse sequence with Radical Media director Dennis Liu at Oklahoma State University. All credit to Spontaneous for working their VFX magic to deliver this television spot in time for NFL season kick-off.
